Perks for Dawson Employees, Well-being for all

How colleagues are enjoying well-being hours

This group of Dawson walkers enjoyed a Black History Month tour led by Paul Wasacz on Feb. 12 in St-Henri and Little Burgundy. They used a lunch hour and one well-being hour to participate.

Other examples of Dawson employees using well-being hours include an outing of colleagues to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, a snowshoe evening hike on Mount Royal and volunteering at Dawson Dinin'.

Since the fall, Dawson employees have one well-being hour/week or four well-being hours/month.

Interior Design students raise thousands of dollars in an hour

On Jan. 22, a class of Interior Design students were told at 10 AM that if they could raise $500 in an hour for their Vernissage, a donor would match the $500.

Chris Adam of the Office of Sustainability shared a story with them about a Community, Recreation and Leadership Training class that raised over $2,000 in an hour many years ago to get the Peace Garden project started.

Wilson Wong new Associate Dean, Academic Systems

On Feb. 6, Wilson Wong began his new role as Associate Dean of Academic Systems. Wilson鈥檚 new job is responsible for the coordination, development and implementation of Academic Systems鈥� office services, including areas like admissions, information, records, registration, credit continuing education, and transmission.

Wilson has been at the College since 2008 and brings extensive experience in managing complex operations and working with teams of varying sizes.

He has served in a variety of roles at Dawson. Most recently, Wilson was Associate Dean of Continuing Education and Community Services (CECS). Prior to that, he was Interim Dean of CECS and Associate Dean and Interim Dean of Science, Medical Studies and Engineering.

Working together for curricular alignment

Coordinators from six career programs in the arts and medical studies at Dawson met regularly throughout the Fall 2024 semester to work on improving program and course alignment to meet program competencies. The participating programs were: Medical Ultrasound, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology, from the Science, Medical Studies and Engineering sector, and Interior Design, Product Design (Industrial Design) and Illustration, from the Creative and Applied Arts sector.

The project was initiated and facilitated by Einat Idan and Monica Lopez, pedagogical counsellors at Dawson鈥檚 Office of Academic Development with support by Vanessa Lyness and Chao Zhang. Einat and Monica shared the project with colleagues from Dawson and the other English-language CEGEPs in Quebec during a talk at Intercollegiate Ped Day on Jan. 14.

Ionkwat贸nhahere (we are celebrating) 鈥� Indigenous Peoples鈥� Week 2025

Ionkwat贸nhahere is a kanien鈥檏茅ha word that means 鈥榳e are celebrating鈥�. Organizers of Indigenous Peoples' Week at 暗网吃瓜 are putting the emphasis on all the incredible contributions that First Nations, Inuit and M茅tis Peoples make in all facets of life.

The dates for Ionkwat贸nhahere - IPW 2025 will be from Monday, March 31 to Thursday, April 3. Activities will be organized in two separate streams: cultural programming specifically for Indigenous students at Dawson, and broader educational activities for the entire Dawson Community. Stay tuned for more information. A complete schedule will be published at the beginning of March.

Update your Dawson email signature

暗网吃瓜 is launching a new email signature meant to be adopted by all employees. The new email signature is graphically simple and will look better on a variety of email services. In addition, using it will ensure that the College complies with Law 14/Bill 96.

All employees are asked to update their signature with the new email signature generator in Omnivox. To generate your new Dawson email signature, go to then select Dawson Email Signature under the Non-Academic Services menu on the left side.

Dawson Reads Feb. 26 event with Alexander MacLeod

The Dawson Reads Writer Series features author Alexander MacLeod reading, talking about his work, and taking questions on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 12 PM in 5B.16. QWF College Writers Award finalist and recent Dawson graduate Clara Frey听will also be reading from her work.听The event is open to the public.

Alexander MacLeod's work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, The Guardian, and The Globe and Mail.听His first collection of short stories, Light Lifting,听was named a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and the Commonwealth Book Prize. In 2019, he won an O Henry Prize. His most recent collection, Animal Person, was published in 2022 and was recognized as a "Book of the Year" byThe New Yorker, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail and CBC Books. Alexander lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and teaches听at Saint Mary鈥檚 University.听

MacLeod holds degrees from McGill University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Windsor. He currently lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and teaches at Saint Mary's University in Halifax.听

In 2024, he edited, with Souvankham Thammavongsa the special 35th anniversary edition of The Journey Prize Anthology.听

Graduating Nursing students stage Health Expo Feb. 28

Welcome to the second edition of the third-year health expo. Nursing students have curated information and resources for the Dawson community. Subjects are varied and interesting and touch a variety of possible populations present at Dawson. From how to create a first aid kit to demystifying IUD's. Come encourage our graduating class! The expo will be Friday, Feb. 28 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the lower atrium.

Would you like some help from Miriam on Campus?

Since its establishment in 1962, Miriam Home and Services has been providing rehabilitative, social, community, work and residential resources and services to people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders so they can reach their full potential.

Two to three adults are regularly on campus at Dawson with the Miriam on Campus Program, which allows them to develop work abilities and acquire practical, hands-on experience working alongside employees.

They are available and eager to perform various tasks while developing autonomy. These tasks may include paper shredding, watering plants, dusting, helping in the cafeteria, laundry, shipping, and much more.

Dawson in 30 seconds reel

Last week Dawson students Garrett Loewen (Nursing), Mahshid Anvari (Commerce profile of Social Science), Nathan Bellemare Smallhorn (CRLT) and Dylan Bielinski-Regan (CRLT) gave their time to collaborate with the F茅d茅ration des c茅geps on a short video.

The fast-paced video is a mini tour of Dawson and was published on Instagram on the le c茅gep account.

Off campus events

Want to know what keeps youth going?

Come and meet seven wonderful CEGEP students who came together at the Kanehsat脿:ke KYOT Youth Center, in workshops facilitated by Tahier貌n:iohte Dan David and Talking Circles led by Elder and Faithkeeper John Cree.

Find out how these young people interpret the challenge to tell their stories and create a multimedia art installation, using materials and mediums of their choice. The theme? 鈥淲hat Keeps Us Going.鈥� Their personal and collective art installation will be unveiled at a community celebration at Kanehsat脿:ke鈥檚 brand new Gathering Place.

Bring your family, friends and kids. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served. The site is wheelchair accessible. F茅d茅ration des c茅geps highlight mental health support at Dawson

The new president of the F茅d茅ration des c茅geps, Marie Montpetit, visited Dawson Feb. 3. The association that represents Quebec鈥檚 public CEGEPs used the opportunity to comment about the importance of mental health in higher education and the need to invest in it.

The F茅d茅ration issued a news release on the same day and highlighted some examples of how Dawson, which it described as 鈥渄istinguishing itself with its holistic vision of well-being,鈥� is responding to the heightened anxiety in students.
