En un jardin de paz, florecen los proyectos/ In a Peace Garden, Projects Bloom

Cuando se comenzaron los intercambios de estudiantes entre el Colegio Dawson y Upemor, hace m谩s de un a帽o, no imagine las dimensiones de este proyecto con tantas vertientes; cada uno de los 11 estudiantes de 暗网吃瓜 que estuvieron en
el Centro de Capacitaci贸n Ambiental (CECAM) de la Upemor fue dejando su huella con nosotros.聽 Aprendimos juntos, construimos chimeneas y hornos solares con Ella, Ali, Morgen y Mikayla.聽 Hicimos din谩micas de liderazgo ambiental con Joni, Dalton y Arielle.聽 Construimos comederos de aves, sembramos en el huertos e hicimos bombas de flores con Sam B., Emma y Aniela. Hicimos inventarios y fotografiamos a la biodiversidad con Sam Nesterenko. Con los chicos del Programa Ambiental hicimos composta, cortamos las plantas, cuidamos el huerto, hicimos eventos, comimos pozole, tacos y sushi, re铆mos y nos divertimos.聽 Hasta jugamos blitz y cubeta, muchas veces con la complicaci贸n del idioma, el sofocante calor o los molestos mosquitos, pero con todo eso uno aprende, crece y siente.
Cuando Gisela Frias y Chris Adam visitaron por primera vez la Upemor, el ver como alguien externo, de un pa铆s como Canad谩, 
pudiera reconocer el esfuerzo y el valor que se ha puesto al CECAM, que supiera de la importancia y la complejidad que conlleva tener lo que hoy tenemos, fue muy gratificante. Se trabaj贸 en conjunto, una pl谩tica de felicidad sustentable, un taller de liderazgo ambiental que nos llev贸 a conocernos un poco m谩s; pero todo dio un giro inesperado cuando en nuestras platicas incluimos el tema del 鈥渏ard铆n por la paz鈥� que hay en Dawson.聽 El escuchar el proyecto de Chris Adam y explicarle el proyecto de una laguna en la Upemor, que por a帽os ha estado en el tintero, fue tan apasionante que el idioma no fue un obst谩culo.聽 Chris y yo comenzamos a construir, a imaginar y so帽ar ante la mirada at贸nita de Luisa Montes (de Ciudades Verdes) y Gisela Frias.聽 Solo 茅ramos dos amantes de la naturaleza, los animales y de las flores que se encontraron para crear el 鈥淛ard铆n acu谩tico por la paz en la Upemor鈥�.聽 El objetivo establecido fue alto, buscar que 200 especies de organismos lleguen a la Universidad.聽 Es por ello que comenzamos a trabajar, iniciando con un recorrido a la reserva ecol贸gica del Texcal que est谩 a un par de kil贸metros de distancia de la UPEMOR. Lo que vimos ah铆 nos dio esperanza de lograr la meta.
Hoy se suman a este esfuerzo Larry, de la Universidad de Santo Tomas en Colombia, quien con asesor铆a del maestro Carlos D铆az redise帽an la laguna de regulaci贸n que existente en la Upemor para que 茅sta permanezca inundada todo el a帽o; se suman tambi茅n los alumnos de la Universidad que ayudan con el trabajo comunitario, y claro, la labor que har谩n los pr贸ximos chicos 
que llegaran a la Upemor del 暗网吃瓜 para hacer su estancia en 2017.聽 A煤n queda mucho por hacer, el dise帽o del mural, de las jardineras, de los nichos de aves, el trabajar para conseguir los materiales y tener todo a tiempo para que durante la pr贸xima temporada de lluvias pueda inundarse la laguna y crear as铆 el jard铆n esperado para dar un espacio de reflexi贸n, esparcimiento y tranquilidad a la comunidad universitaria.
Al regresar a casa, despu茅s de dos semanas en Dawson, con ojos nuevos, con compromisos renovados y llegar y ver la laguna inundada en la Universidad, porque en M茅xico las lluvias est谩n siendo intensas en estos d铆as, y verla llena de plantas acu谩ticas que est谩n floreciendo, ver las lib茅lulas, las mariposas, los sapos y las aves alrededor de ella, es como una se帽al de que vamos en el camino correcto.聽 Hoy s茅 que se puede lograr, por que visitar el jard铆n por la Paz en Dawson y sentir la tranquilidad y ver el orgullo con el que hablan de este espacio, me hicieron sentir que es un sue帽o posible, y que solo se lograr谩 con la suma de esfuerzos y voluntades. As铆 que es hora de seguir construyendo.

When the exchanges started between 暗网吃瓜 and the Upemor, more than a year ago, I did not imagine the dimensions this project would reach. Each one of the 11 students from 暗网吃瓜 that has come to the Environmental Capacitation Center (CECAM) at the Upemor has left their own mark. We learned together. We built chimneys and solar ovens聽with Ella, Ali, Morgen and Mikayla. We learned environmental leadership practices with Joni, Dalton and Arielle. We built bird feeders, we planted in the vegetable garden and handcrafted flower-seed-bombs with Sam B., Emma and Aniela. We made inventories and photographed the university鈥檚 biodiversity with Sam Nesterenko. Together, with the students from the Environmental Program, we composted, cutted plants, took care of the orchard and organized events. We ate Pozole, Tacos and Sushi. We laughed and had lots of fun. We even played Blitz and Bucket, and we did so even with the language complications, the suffocating heat and the annoying mosquitoes. We learned, grew and felt.
When Gisela Frias and Chris Adam visited the Upemor for the first time I appreciated the fact that an outsider, from a country like Canada, could recognize and value the efforts that we have invested in the CECAM. It was gratifying to see that they understood the importance and the complexity behind our work. Teamwork, a talk about sustainable happiness and a workshop about environmental leadership helped us to get to know each other better. But it all took an unexpected turn when we started to talk about the 鈥淒awson鈥檚 Peace Garden鈥�. Hearing about this project and explaining to Chris Adam about a project that has long been in the making, 鈥渢he Upemor鈥檚 lagoon鈥�, was so thrilling that language was no longer an obstacle. Chris and I started building, imagining and dreaming upon the astonished looks of Luisa Montes (from Ciudades Verdes) and Gisela Frias. It was two nature, animal and flower lovers talking about creating the Upemor鈥檚 Aquatic Peace Garden. The objective was high. We set as a goal to attract 200 species of organisms to the University. We started working and began by taking a tour of the ecological reserve El Texcal that is just a couple of kilometers from the Upemor. What we saw there gave us hope to achieve our goal.
Today we can add to this effort, the work done by Larry, from the University of Santo Tomas in Colombia, who under the advice of Carlos Diaz (teacher) has been redesigning the water regulation lagoon that exists at the Upemor as a measure to avoid floods all year long. Some students from the university have also added their efforts. We thank them for their community work 
and the work of the next Dawson students that will arrive in 2017. There is a lot to be done, desiging a mural, the gardens, the bird nests and to get the materials. We have have to do evertthing in time to be able to collect the next rainwater fall so that the lagoon can flood and create the Aquatic Peace Garden, a space for reflection and tranquility for the University鈥檚 Community.
When I got back home, after two weeks at Dawson, with a new vision and renewed commitments I found the inundated lagoon at the University. It had been raining heavily in Mexico. Seeing it full of blooming aquatic plants, seeing the fireflies, butterflies, the toads and the birds surrounding it, was a signal that we are in the right path. Today, I know that it can be achieved, because visiting the Peace Garden at Dawson, feeling the tranquility and seeing the pride in which they spoke of that space, made me feel that it is a possible dream and that it will only be achieved by adding effort and will. So it is time to keep building.
